System Check and Profiling

System Check and Profiling

System Check

This guide begins after you've selected a link from the ProctorFree Launch Portal and have downloaded and installed the ProctorFree Desktop Application.

During the System Check we'll ensure your camera, audio devices, internet speed, and processor meet our minimum requirements.

⚠️ macOS users: You may receive a pop-up prompting you to enable the screen recording permissions required for using ProctorFree. Failure to do so may result in your institution electing to not accept your proctored session.
Tips for Successfully Completing the System Compatibility Check
  • Close any extra programs or applications that are not required during your proctored session. Pay attention to the instructions provided by your institution regarding what is, and what is not, allowed during the exam, including any study guides.
  • Disconnect any additional monitors from your primary computer.
  • Verify your microphone and webcam are working properly.
  • When using laptop computers, they should be connected to a power supply.
  • Review our technical requirements.
  • Ensure there aren't other unnecessary items using your internet bandwidth - for example, someone streaming or downloading files in the next room.

Facial Detection & Authentication

ProctorFree utilizes facial detection software as a means of authentication for your proctored session. We understand facial detection is still an emerging technology that many of our end users may not have encountered before. To help familiarize you with facial detection and using it for authentication with ProctorFree's systems, we've outlined some important information below.

Before Getting Started

Before creating your profile or authenticating, it's critical to make sure a few basic requirements are met. Our facial detection software uses your camera to create data points from key facial features - your eyes, nose, mouth, and jawline. To ensure a quality profile is created for quick and easy authentication, positioning, stillness, and lighting are key.

✅ Position yourself correctly
Fill the oval with your face - your chin should touch the bottom of the oval, and the top of your forehead should touch the top. The oval will turn green (good) or red (needs adjustment) to indicate acceptable positioning and lighting.
✅ Light your face evenly
Make sure your key facial features are evenly and well illuminated, with minimal shadowing around your eyes, nose, mouth, and jawline.
✅ Remove glasses
Take off glasses for profiling and authenticating - you may wear them during your exam. During profiling/authentication, glare and reflections can prevent correct eye mapping and cause authentication issues.
✅ Clear your face and forehead
Remove hats and pull back hair that may block a clear view of your face or forehead.
✅ Stay still and look up slightly
Remain still throughout the process and focus your eyes roughly 1 inch above your camera. This naturally opens your eyes and improves facial detection mapping.
✅ Smile if you want - just stay consistent
It's okay to smile during profile creation! If you do, smile the same way during authentication.

Having Issues with Lighting?
💡 Use natural light when possible
The best lighting is natural light. Facing a window allows sunlight to evenly illuminate your key facial features while minimizing shadows that overhead lighting can cause.
⚠️ Keep light sources out of camera view
Make sure lighting sources - windows, overhead lights, lamps, or flashlights - aren't directly visible in the camera capture window. Light sources positioned behind you can cause your camera to focus incorrectly, preventing minimum lighting requirements from being met.
